SaskScapes – The Provincial Heritage Fair

Heritage Saskatchewan is the collective voice of all those who value heritage in Saskatchewan. As knowledge-brokers and pathfinders, Heritage Saskatchewan raises awareness of Living Heritage.

Join Kevin Power at the Provincial Heritage Fair held in Regina in May 2016. The Heritage Fair program is a student-centered, inquiry learning opportunity to explore Saskatchewan and Canada. For the past 20 years teachers and students from across Saskatchewan (from grades 4 to 8) have been participating in these amazing events. Students are chosen to represent their class or school at one of the four Regional Heritage Fairs and from that event several students are chosen to present their projects at the Provincial Heritage Fair. With brilliant, articulate and passionate young minds like those we hear from in this episode, the future preservation of our heritage is in very good hands!

SaskScapes turns 70 and what better way to celebrate than with the man who has provided the theme music for the podcast since episode one. Saskatchewan born singer/songwriter Jeffery Straker has established himself as one of the most successful (and busiest) artists this province has produced, and has gone on to international acclaim.  Kevin Power joins Jeffery in a conversation that is more fun than two people ought to have in a podcast!  And, it’s another “6 degrees” moment as Jeffery reveals his musical lineage which connects him to Beethoven and Chopin. The Things Bea Arthur Ate by Coby

Many people, mostly kids, who’ve taken my digital storytelling workshops have done their stories on their family pets. At my final workshop as a Culture Days Animateur, held at the Queen City Hub, Coby Stephenson wrote, voiced and produced this funny and touching digital story about her dog, Bea Arthur. Bea Arthur is a Labrador Retriever who has destroyed many of Coby’s belongings, but, as Coby puts it, “out of destruction comes the strength to let things go.”

In my digital storytelling workshops, I’ve been encouraging participants to tell first-person stories. But another way to tell a story is to interview someone. About a year ago, I sat down with my mother at her dining room table, with a handheld recorder, and I asked her to tell me some stories about my birth. I listened to those anecdotes a few days ago and turned one of them into this digital story.

Length of time it took to make:  4 hours

Equipment used: Zoom H4n recorder; Macbook Pro laptop

Software: Audacity; iMovie ’09
