SaskScapes – INVOLVE

How involved are you in my community?  Imagine what it must be like for newcomers to Saskatchewan who have so many challenges that many of us take for granted. Perhaps learning a new language, adapting to a new climate, finding ones place in the community and so much more.

INVOLVE is an initiative launched in 2015 through the combined efforts of the Multicultural Council of Saskatchewan (MCoS), SaskCulture and the Regina Open Door Society (RODS).

The facilitator training program readies select participants from local community organizations to integrate INVOLVE into their own communities.  In turn, newcomers have opportunities where they can begin to contribute to their communities and have their voices heard.

Kevin Power is joined by guests from MCoS, SaskCulture, RODS, and the city of Yorkton.  You’ll hear about the exciting impact INVOLVE is having, and will continue to have throughout Saskatchewan.

SaskScapes – with guest Harold Hague

It’s the final episode of 2015! Happy holidays to you all.  Kevin Power is joined by WWII veteran Harold Hague, who, at the young age of 94 shows no sign of slowing down. Harold shares some heroic tales from his time serving overseas, reminding us, that in war, nobody wins.  Harold is joined by his wife Jan who is an artist in her own right and certainly has enough to keep herself busy during her own retirement. Regina residents will know Harold as the owner of Loggie’s Shoes, part of the downtown retail landscapes for years, and now home to Regina’s Creative City Centre and the Hague Gallery.

SaskScapes – with guest Gary Edwards

Gary Edwards is a Cultural Support Provider for Residential School Survivors at All Nations Hope in Regina. A survivor himself, Gary was rounded up by a gunboat and issued to a residential school in Ile Ste. Croix at the age of 2. Gary talks about his experience, painting pictures with his words- his phrasing almost poetic. He speaks of his journey to healing, the Indigenous way of life, and the many guides who have supported him on his path. It is my hope, as it is Gary’s, that someone hears this episode who needs to hear it in order to help in their own healing, As Gary says: “Let’s hope that one day this conversations never happens”.

If you ever find yourself playing a Saskatchewan music trivia game you’ll want this guy on your team! And if you are ever in search of the perfect Saskatchewanian to be the subject of a “6 degrees of separation” game, well look no further! Taron Cochrane has received many accolades in our province and it’s likely because every cell of his being vibrates with the Saskatchewan music scene. But beyond that, Taron tirelessly gives of his time and talents in so many ways; driven by passion, motivation, community involvement, and volunteerism.

Evacuee relief concerts with guest Sheryl Kimbley

This is a special bonus edition of SaskScapes being posted during a time when the northern communities of Saskatchewan are facing a very difficult situation. Over 100 forest fires continue to burn and have forced thousands of residents out of their homes. The evacuees have moved swiftly to various locations across the province without a great deal of time to take all of their belongings.  Sheryl Kimbley has put a call out to local musicians in the Saskatoon, Regina, and Prince Albert areas to come together in a show of support and hold benefit concerts to raise funds. The support so far has been overwhelming. This podcast was recorded in Saskatoon on June 30, 2015. If you are in the Regina area on July 4, 2015 or Prince Albert on July 5th, come by the venues announced in this podcast and show your support.
