Evacuee relief concerts with guest Sheryl Kimbley

This is a special bonus edition of SaskScapes being posted during a time when the northern communities of Saskatchewan are facing a very difficult situation. Over 100 forest fires continue to burn and have forced thousands of residents out of their homes. The evacuees have moved swiftly to various locations across the province without a great deal of time to take all of their belongings.  Sheryl Kimbley has put a call out to local musicians in the Saskatoon, Regina, and Prince Albert areas to come together in a show of support and hold benefit concerts to raise funds. The support so far has been overwhelming. This podcast was recorded in Saskatoon on June 30, 2015. If you are in the Regina area on July 4, 2015 or Prince Albert on July 5th, come by the venues announced in this podcast and show your support.

Stay tuned…Season two of SaskScapes is about to launch with a great new line up of guests and a very exciting announcment to follow!

SaskScapes – with guest Amanda Amundrud from “The Root”

Amanda Amundrud is the founding owner of The Root Community Emporium in Lloydminster, Saskatchewan. The Root is not just a quirky old building, it’s a “happening” where people from all walks of life gather to share stories, knowledge, eat delicious locally sourced food, …basically “plug in” and connect with each other. On this Thanksgiving weekend I hang out with Amanda at The Root, and then attend the annual “Harvest Lantern Walk”.

SaskScapes – Grilledcheesapolooza

From humble beginnings in 2010 with a single metal band called Quetzalcoatl performing a backyard show and barbecuing grilled cheeses with friends in Kindersley, SK. Ever since this original backyard show, attendees and the number of grilled cheese sandwiches consumed at the Kindersley based festival have been doubling each year. With two stages, over twenty musical acts and a large art exhibition, the festival is now expecting attendance in the thousands.  In the coming years Grilledcheesapolooza will strive to grow and achieve its mission while staying true to the roots and core philosophies that gave birth to this festival. ALL HAIL THE CHEESE!

SaskScapes-The Radisson Music Festival – with Avery & Gerald

Born of previous musical events in the area, this year launches the premier of the Radisson Music Festival. A vision fully realized by my second guest, Radisson town councillor and musician Gerald Wiebe. My first guest is a fresh new musician on the Saskatchewan music landscape. At 18 years old, Avery Fairbrother has caught the eye (and ears) of the towns of Borden, Radisson and beyond. He’s ambitious, smart, articulate and great with numbers!

My hosts, Jan Johnston and Neil Jones join me after a fantastic home cooked breakfast and share their stories of how they came to Rockglen and their passion for presenting live music and exhibiting original art. Swift Current painter/musician Ken Christopher joins us, and Brenda Feuerstein is back!
