SaskScapes – Urban Canvas

Saskatoon Community Youth Arts Programming (SCYAP) offers a unique employment experience known as URBAN CANVAS. After an hiatus period, Urban Canvas is back with massive support from the city of Saskatoon and the province of Saskatchewan. At-risk youth learn the vital skills to propel them forward in life using art and culture as a tool. Kevin Power is joined by past participants who are now instructors at SCYAP, as well as current participants. Together they share the personal impact this program has on their lives. At  the end of the podcast you’ll hear part of a speech given by SCYAP’s executive director Darrell Lechman (heard last season in Episode 30). Darrell spoke at the opening exhibit and media launch of Urban Canvas held at the SCYAP gallery on November 20, 2015. An impressive crowd including Saskatoon Mayor Don Aitchison, members of the Saskatoon Fire Department, Police Department, and many more.

SaskScapes featured on CBC’s “Podcast Playlist”

What a thrill for us all to have SaskScapes featured in an episode of the national CBC radio show “Podcast Playlist”.  The show features podcasts from around the world and in this weeks episode entitled “Keeping it Local” episode 57 of SaskScapes is featured in the last segment.

A stand-out experience this summer has been the opportunity to feature a series of podcasts on “The 60’s Scoop”. Episode 57 features Dr. Raven Sinclair.  Raven’s story is heartbreaking yet triumphant and I was honoured by her openness.

A big thank you to CBC for bringing SaskScapes to “Podcast Playlist”. It is my hope that Raven’s story, and all of the stories that comprise SaskScapes continue to be heard in Saskatchewan around the world.

SaskScapes – “The 60’s Scoop” – with guest Carol Daniels

Kevin Power brings voice to the “60’s Scoop” as a feature story in the SaskScapes season. The “60’s Scoop” is a dark chapter in our Canadian and First Nations history and culture. There are four episodes in total which were recorded over the past few months. These are the stories of a few…there are thousands more. Thank you sincerely, to these four guests, for being generous enough to share this part of your story. We all have much to learn from you.

In this episode Kevin is joined by fellow Community Engagement Animateur Carol Daniels.

SaskScapes – with guest Jack Saddleback

This episode of SaskScapes has it all! A story of First Nation’s culture and heritage, family, gender diversity, mental health, community engagement and meeting royalty. Kevin is joined by Jack Saddleback, currently the President of the Univeristy of Saskatchewan’s Student Union and the first transgendered male in that position.  This is a story of tremendous courage – the courage to live life authentically and with dignity. An empowering episode filled with humor and passion.

SaskScapes – The Rosebud Burlesque Club

Saskatoon’s “Rosebud Burlesque Club” has been setting fire to the wheat fields and steaming up the landscape! Headmistress Cheripop Purr has been the driving force behind the neo-burlesque movement in Saskatchewan. A few members of the troupe join us in what an eye-opening, brave, and very fun look into this art form. The neo-burlesque movement is putting the “tease” back in striptease – making a bold statement, sometimes political, and is a unifying force between people of all genders.  A truly fun way to welcome in our 40th episode!

SaskScapes – Remembering Alvin

A moving tribute to Alvin Cote who lived much of his life on the streets. He touched the lives of many in Saskatoon, including my two guests, who share their memories of the life of a man who continues to have an impact many, even after his passing.

SaskScapes – with guest Wendy Robinson

Wendy Robinson joins me along with her cousin Brenda Sapergia and their two horses, Gypsy and Zeva. “Equine Therapy” brings unconditional companionship and comfort in times of joy and sadness. Horses have played a major role in the lives of Wendy and Brenda and have brought them through some life-changing events.

SaskScapes – with guest Weldon Gray

Weldon Gray is a luthier, a wizard, and has kept company with greats like Fred Flintstone and Barney Rubble! Enough said…Weldon defines the term a “Renaissance man”.

International Indigenous Art Program at NAIG 2014

At the closing ceremonies of the North American Indigenous Games, youth from across North America, in collaboration with senior artists and emerging artists, presented a 15-minute performance that they created in 5 days as part of the International Indigenous Art Program (IIAP).

The senior artists were Cheryl L’Hirondelle (interdisciplinary), Jason Baerg (visual art), Ramses Calderon (music), Erroll Kinistino (theatre and dance) and Lyndon Tootoosis (sculpture, traditional carving). Each senior artist mentored one of the emerging artists, Nicole Akan (theatre), Jules Beudin-Herney (visual art), Candy Fox (film/video), Lacy Morin-Desjarlais (dance) and Garnett “Misfit” Tootoosis (music).

I had the honour of making a digital story (shown above), which documents the participants’ creative process in 5 days. Congratulations to everyone involved on an incredible final performance!

The IIAP is funded through the Creative Partnerships Raising the Bar program. Creative Partnerships is a joint initiative of the Saskatchewan Arts Board and SaskCulture with funding from the Saskatchewan Lotteries Trust Fund for Sport, Culture and Recreation. The Regina 2014 NAIG entered into a partnership with Sâkêwêwak First Nations Artists’ Collective to deliver the program and administer the residency.
