SaskScapes – INVOLVE

How involved are you in my community?  Imagine what it must be like for newcomers to Saskatchewan who have so many challenges that many of us take for granted. Perhaps learning a new language, adapting to a new climate, finding ones place in the community and so much more.

INVOLVE is an initiative launched in 2015 through the combined efforts of the Multicultural Council of Saskatchewan (MCoS), SaskCulture and the Regina Open Door Society (RODS).

The facilitator training program readies select participants from local community organizations to integrate INVOLVE into their own communities.  In turn, newcomers have opportunities where they can begin to contribute to their communities and have their voices heard.

Kevin Power is joined by guests from MCoS, SaskCulture, RODS, and the city of Yorkton.  You’ll hear about the exciting impact INVOLVE is having, and will continue to have throughout Saskatchewan.

SaskScapes – Yorkton: the Canada150 Mural Mosaic

In 2017, Canadians across the country have been planning how their communities would celebrate 150 years of Confederation.  Among those hundreds of events and projects came an idea initiated by Alberta artist Louis Lavoie. A dream to connect our country by creating the mural mosaics project. 150 communities, participated throughout the year, in creating their own murals made from hundreds of individually painted tiles.

Yorkton, Saskatchewan. was one of the participating communities and clearly that city couldn’t have been more proud of the result.  In this episode Kevin Power is joined by 6 guests, via telephone, who contributed to the  creation of the Yorkton mosaic.  In the end, Yorkton’s mural consisted of over 600 individually painted tiles. The links to the mural mosaic project can be found here,  as well as links to the city of Yorkton and the Godfrey Dean Art Gallery

SaskScapes – Living Heritage

This episode is sponsored by HERITAGE SASKATCHEWAN

Heritage Saskatchewan is the collective voice of all those who value heritage in our province. As knowledge brokers and pathfinders, Heritage Saskatchewan raises awareness of Living Heritage.

===============================================

In this episode Kevin is joined by Dale Jarvis and Kristin Catherwood who have been on tour through Saskatchewan offering guest lectures and workshops on Intangible Cultural Heritage and keeping our traditions alive. There is also some very entertaining conversation about hauntings, fairy tales, tall tales, and the mummers! Whether some of these legends are true isn’t really the point. The interesting discussion is in how they have become interwoven into the fibre of our living Heritage.

SaskScapes – It’s all about family

It’s said that behind every great artist there stands a great team, and part of that team is the family. Kevin Power is joined by the parents of two performers (ALEXIS NORMAND & FARIDEH OLSEN) from ROSIE AND THE RIVETERS (www.rosieandtheriveters.com), and the parents of Canadian singer/songwriter JEFFERY STRAKER (www.jefferystraker.com).  The topic of conversation is the key role parents and families play in fostering music and creativity;  from their children’s early formative years, to their ongoing support – even now that they are successful artists.
